Spanish-Speaking Training Project Associate

The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is seeking a full time Bi-lingual Spanish Speaking Project Associate in our Training Department.

UHAB empowers low- to moderate-income residents to take control of their housing and enhance communities by creating strong tenant associations and lasting affordable co-ops. Since 1973, UHAB has helped form hundreds of tenant associations and assisted in the transformation of some 1,600 troubled rental buildings into 1,350 affordable co-ops, providing homeownership opportunities for residents of more than 30,000 apartments. With democratic community control at the core of our mission, we work to sustain this thriving affordable housing community for this generation and those to come.

We organize residents to be active participants and decision-makers in shaping their neighborhoods. UHAB’s programs address a full spectrum of affordable housing needs: from building resident power and organizing tenants as community leaders, to developing thousands of units of affordable housing across the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, to making small loans to first-time homeowners, to preserving existing affordable coops through training, education workshops, technical assistance, and regulatory compliance. UHAB’s programs and activities address the needs of future generations through long-term solutions: developing new affordable coops, creating energy efficient and solar power opportunities, and strengthening housing policy.

About the Training Department

UHAB provides training and technical assistance to owners in limited equity co-ops and tenants in affordable coop conversions throughout New York City and nationwide. UHAB’s own participatory adult learning method is used by the Training Department in formal classes for building residents. We believe that adults learn best by doing and instruct through the “Small Group Activity Method.” This involves a set of questions in scenarios which a class works off, together, to answer. UHAB staff do not lecture; we actively facilitate a group discussion to the correct answer or logical conclusion for that group. Training topics fall under three broad categories: financial management, co-op governance and physical building health. Specific topics range from budgeting
exercises to running effective meetings, board and shareholder responsibilities, integrated pest management and more. Through formal training, UHAB provides residents with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to democratically govern and financially preserve their affordable housing cooperatives.


The Training Department Project Associate Trainer will coordinate and facilitate classes for shareholders and leaders in existing co-ops and for renters in co-op-converting buildings. This work will focus on projects in NYC but may include virtual trainings in projects in other cities or states. The Project Associate will assist the Director and Assistant Director of Training in developing new training curricula for external use and as internal staff resources. Responsibilities include:

  • Creating new or revising training material
  • Keeping updated on policy, legal, administrative or other changes which affect our training materials
  • Maintaining accurate records of attendance and certificates of completion.
  • Translating or editing curriculum into Spanish as needed
  • Creating and disseminating outreach materials about classes via direct mailings, phone contact, email blast, appropriate social media if relevant, etc.
  • Coordinating with co-op or resident association leadership, co-op sponsor, or appropriate NYC agency to set the training schedule for the target audience
  • Delivering trainings virtually or at a resident building or community site at least three times a week, most likely during PM evening hours
  • Managing ongoing resident contact
  • Updating database of resident contact information
  • Writing unique training reports as needed
  • Providing technical assistance to co-ops and future co-ops as needed


  • Experience creating and delivering interactive training
  • Fluent in Spanish. Able to read, write and conduct trainings in Spanish.
  • Can facilitate a virtual training and is familiar with virtual streaming
  • Relevant or equivalent work experience (adult education, curriculum development, labor organizing, community organizing, project management or related employment)
  • Understanding and interest in cooperatives; housing co-ops and alternative models of ownership is a plus
  • Welcome the chance to develop strong relationships with diverse resident populations through regular meetings over 1-2 years
  • Work well independently; is self-motivated
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and follow-up skills, careful attention to detail.
  • Communicate complex ideas, orally and in writing, in a clear and accessible way.
  • Support inclusion, social and economic justice, and respect in our work with low-income buildings and communities
  • Enjoy work as part of a team, including across departments, in mutually supportive way
  • Does well in a fast-paced environment that values and requires information sharing.
  • Comfortable with technology; simple spreadsheets, data management, flyer prep. Publisher, Adobe Acrobat, google docs

The interview will be done in English and Spanish.


UHAB’s work is carried out by 26 staff members in our main office in Lower Manhattan. During the COVID pandemic we are working almost completely virtually, but expect to return to the office.
