Part-Time Loan Officer
The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is seeking a loan officer for our low to moderate income cooperative housing loan program.
UHAB empowers low- to moderate-income residents to take control of their housing and enhance communities by creating strong tenant associations and lasting affordable co-ops. Since 1973, UHAB has helped form hundreds of tenant associations and assisted in the transformation of some 1,600 troubled rental buildings into 1,350 affordable co-ops, providing homeownership opportunities for residents of more than 30,000 apartments. With democratic community control at the core of our mission, we work to sustain this thriving affordable housing community for this generation and those to come.
We organize residents to be active participants and decision-makers in shaping their neighborhoods. UHAB’s programs address a full spectrum of affordable housing needs: from building resident power and organizing tenants as community leaders, to developing thousands of units of affordable housing across the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, to making small loans to first-time homeowners, to preserving existing affordable co-ops through training, education workshops, technical assistance, and regulatory compliance. UHAB’s programs and activities address the needs of future generations through long-term solutions: developing new affordable co-ops, creating energy efficient and solar power opportunities, and strengthening housing policy.
About the Lending Program
UHAB is an Exempt Mortgage Broker and our lending subsidiary HomeOwnership Lending, LLC (“HOL”) is an Exempt Mortgage Banker. HOL is at a crucial stage in its growth and in need of a dynamic individual interested in partaking in strategic expansion. The loan officer will work exclusively on loans offered by HOL. HOL grows out of the increasingly large role that UHAB has found itself playing as a last-resort source of credit for the co-op apartments and their owners. The unusual features of the buildings, the complex subsidies that went into their development, the limited-equity cooperative ownership structure combined with the fragile conditions of the communities in which they are located, and the low incomes of most of the residents have made credit hard to come by for the co-ops themselves and for the those seeking to purchase co-op shares. The difficult credit conditions of recent years and increasing regimentation of underwriting have exacerbated the problem. HOL’s role is to address these issues and to work to improve the flow of credit to support the continued success of the co-ops and the eligible New Yorkers purchasing into them.
UHAB is hiring for a predominantly remote 20 hour flexible schedule independent contractor between the professional hours of 9AM – 6PM, M-F and some evenings. Responsibilities will fall into three categories for low- to moderate income New Yorkers purchasing into limited-equity cooperatives: outreach and relationship building; loan origination, underwriting, and closing; and implementation of new loan products.
- Build and maintain relationships with resident boards, management companies, agencies and other possible stakeholders with the goal of growing HOL’s loan pipeline.

- Describe the range of loan products to prospective borrowers, co-op boards and management companies.
- Take in loan applications and required supporting documentation.
- Perform due diligence in underwriting consistent with UHAB loan policy.
- Present completed loan applications to the Credit Committee and jointly make decisions
- Communicate the decision to the applicant
- Close loans
- Portfolio Management
- Maintain accurate loan files
- Help develop work-out strategies with borrowers who become delinquent or default on payment
- Other Responsibilities
- Work with the UHAB staff on special projects as required
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree preferably in a business-related field such as finance, economics or accounting. Experience using BytePro software preferred. Strong computer skills and strong oral and written communication skills. The following skills are required:
- 1-2 years of experience processing loan applications or loan underwriting.
- Proficiency with MS Excel.
- Proficiency in Spanish preferred but not necessary.
- A high degree of self-motivation, initiative, dedication and a commitment to the community development mission of UHAB.
The position of Loan Officer may be done predominantly from a remote location but may require some office visits at UHAB’s main office, located in Lower Manhattan. During the COVID pandemic we are working almost completely virtually, but expect to return to the office.
$20-$35/Hour (depending on qualifications and experience). Current expectation is approximately 20 hours per week. Independent Contractor position with no benefits.
